Commissioned Public
Sculptures
Civilizations have always
sought to memorialize people in some manner either in stone, bronze
or other durable materials and a full size bronze statue of a person is a truly
lasting memorial.
Bronze statuary is a powerful and
permanent monumental medium to honour special people and special
achievements.
Hans Holtkamp's bronze statue of the
'Joys' child in the cemetery
at Saskatoon is a recreation of a 1920s marble statue that had been vandalized
beyond repair. Originally memorialized as a marble statue by an Italian
sculptor, the Joys child monument was one of the first likenesses to be erected
at a grave site in western Canada. Working from old newspaper photos of the
original statue, Hans Holtkamp recreated the Joys child monument in bronze and
it is now a truly permanent memorial.
Statues are a
lasting landmark to commemmorate a well known personage in a
community. Whether a public figure, a politician, a corporate leader or a well
known and well loved city personality, full bronze life-size portraiture
reminds people every day of that person's influence.
